七、课程描述

《批判性读与写》是为非英语专业学生开设的大学英语基础阶段的拓展课程。本课程的主要目的和任务是培养学生的批判性思维能力、信息搜集整理及陈述能力、逻辑推理能力。该课程是一门理论与实践相结合的课程。首先,本课程从审辨式思维出发,了解审辨式思维的特点,标准,以及一些基本概念。第二,本课程要培养具有审辨能力的阅读者。要求学生能够以积极阅读的基本技巧,能够对阅读文章进行深度理解,清楚说服、论述、分析、推理。第三,本课程培养具有审辨能力的写作者。要求学生能够写出逻辑严谨、策略得当、主题清楚、观点明确的论述论文。

教学内容按审辨式思维、批判性阅读、批判性写作三个模块进行。具体内容及安排如下:

主题包括:

第一章:审辨式思维

第1周: What is critical thinking?

CONTENT: This week’s lecture will help to understand what is critical thinking, Critical thinking standards, and characteristics of critical thinker.

第2-3周: What’s their point?

CONTENT: This week’s lecture will help to identify the key components of an argument, develop strategies for identifying reasons, conclusions and arguments within a message, and then practice identifying simple arguments.

READING: Critical Thinking Skills, 2nd Ed. Chapter 3

第4周: Is it an argument?

CONTENT: This week is to understand the distinction between argument and disagreement, recognize forms of non-argument such as summaries, explanations and description, distinguish analytical writing from descriptive writing, and select relevant material from extraneous material.

READING: Critical Thinking Skills, 2nd Ed. Chapter 4

第5-6周: How well do they say it?

CONTENT: This week will help students check arguments for clarity and internal consistency, identify logical consistency in an argument, check for logical order, understand what is meant by joint and independent reasons, and identify intermediate conclusions and understand their use.

READING: Critical Thinking Skills, 2nd Ed. Chapter 5

第7周: Critical Reading: Getting Started

CONTENT: This week would focus on Active Reading and Summarizing and Paraphrasing by studying some basic skills of previewing, skimming and other skills.

READING: Critical Thinking, Reading and Writing, 6th Ed. Chapter 2

第8-9周: Critical Reading: Getting Deeper into Arguments

CONTENT: These weeks would explore persuasion, argument, dispute, reason vs. rationalization and some procedures in argument.

READING: Critical Thinking, Reading and Writing, 6th Ed. Chapter 3

第三章: Critical Writing

第10-11周: Writing an analysis of an argument

CONTENT: These weeks would help to analyze an argument by examining the author’s thesis, the author’s purpose, methods and persona, and guide to write analysis of an argument.

READING: Critical Thinking, Reading and Writing, 6th Ed. Chapter 5

第12-13周: Developing an argument of your own

CONTENT: These weeks require students apply what they’ve learned in the course to develop their own arguments with the basic procedures of planning, drafting, and revising. Peer review will also be required in these weeks.

READING: Critical Thinking, Reading and Writing, 6th Ed. Chapter 6

第14-15周: Using Sources

CONTENT: In this week, students will learn why to use sources, how to chose a topic, find material and find quality information on the web, library database and locate books. Sources evaluation will also be discussed.

第16周: Test

CONTENT: In 90 minutes, an article of about 1000 words will be read with the basic critical reading skills, and students are to write an analysis of the article with no less than 250 words.

九、教学方法

本课程采用任务型、项目式教学法,强调学生在用中学,强调深度学习。

本课程的所有教材是国外高校全英文教材,内容准确,编排科学,重点突出。

十、考核及成绩评定方式

本课程学业成绩由形成性评估和终结性评估相结合。

形成性评估(80%):由课堂参与、课程作业、课堂测验、课程项目等多方面任务构成。

终结性评估形式可以分为2种:

课程论文。要求学生能够在课外完成一篇不少于500词的课程论文,并达到课程论文评分标准。

读后评述。要求学生在规定时间内完成不少于1000词的论述文阅读,并按照要求进行内容概要写作、观点评述。
